The Department of Internal Diseases No. 1 was established in 1991 on the basis of the 3rd city Hospital of Gomel.
The department was headed by Vasily Fedorovich Aleynikov, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor, Honored Doctor of the Ukrainian SSR. A lot of research work was carried out under his leadership. He published more than 100 scientific papers and had great pedagogical abilities. For his services to the development of medical science and his contribution to practical healthcare, he was awarded the honorary title of "Excellent Healthcare Worker".
Professors and associate professors from Belarusian universities, as well as experienced therapists from Gomel, became employees of the Department.
In the 1991-1992 academic years, the Department trained 6th-year students transferred from other medical universities of the Republic, as well as 1st-year students.
The Department faced the tasks of forming scientific potential, developing and defending dissertation topics, and choosing scientific directions. Graduate students and applicants who later became its employees studied at the department.
In 1993, PhD of medicine, Associate Professor Irena Ivanovna Mistyukevich, who was also the head of the Cardiology unit of the 3rd City Hospital of Gomel, was appointed head of the Department.
From 2004 to 2013, the hematology course was founded at the Department. Since 2021, the course has been organized again and Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor S.A. Khoduleva has been appointed head of the course.
Since September 2014, the Department has been headed by PhD of medicine, Associate Professor Ekaterina Gennadievna Malaeva.
In September 2016, the Endocrinology course was added to the Department of Internal Medicine No. 1, which is headed by PhD of medicine, Associate Professor Marina Petrovna Kaplieva.
The clinical bases of the Department are Healthcare institutions Gomel City Clinical Hospital № 3, Gomel City Clinical Hospital № 1, Gomel Regional Clinical Hospital, Gomel Regional Clinical Center of Dermatovenerology and Cosmetology, Gomel University Clinic - Regional Hospital for the Disabled of the Great World War and the Republican Scientific and Practical Center for Radiation Medicine and Human Ecology (RNPC RM and EC), Gomel City Clinical Emergency Hospital.
The Department conducts educational, methodological, research, therapeutic, ideological and educational work.
Since 2024, the University has established a personal scholarship from the Council of I.I. Mistyukevich Gomel State Medical University for high personal academic achievements, active participation in the social and scientific life of the University.
In 2024, a personal scholarship named after I.I. Mistyukevich was awarded to students Ekaterina Gormash and Alexey Shupranov. In 2025, the scholarship was awarded to Anna Perepletchikova.
