Faculty of Medicine
The Faculty of General Medicine of Educational Institution "Gomel State Medical University" trains students in the specialty 1-79 01 04 "General Medicine".
Student’s training is carried out in 35 departments of the university in more than 100 disciplines, including optional courses.
Training at the faculty lasts for 6 years, speciality "General Medicine", qualification is "Doctor".
During the first two years of studies, students master natural and medical-biological sciences, and the fundamentals of humanities and social sciences.
The core subjects for students are normal anatomy and histology, cytology, and embryology. In the third year, the emphasis is put on general professional disciplines.
Starting from the third year, students of the Faculty of General Medicine undergo practical training, which helps students to consolidate, deepen, improve, and systematize theoretical knowledge obtained during the course of study. It will promote acquiring practical skills necessary for independent professional activity in future.
During the first year of studies students complete introductory training, during the second year - medical care training. After the third year medical students complete nursing medical training with medical instruments and techniques; after the fourth year - medical outpatient training; and after the fifth year - medical clinical training.
Students actively participate in the treatment and diagnostic process, learning from their instructors.
During the sixth year, students complete pre-graduate internship in the following areas of the speciality “General Medicine”: anesthesiology and resuscitation, obstetrics and gynecology, surgery, therapy, and general medical practice.
The faculty's curriculum culminates in state examinations in internal diseases, surgical diseases, obstetrics and gynecology, and public health and healthcare.
Starting from the first year of studies, students have the opportunity to attend student research clubs of both theoretical and clinical departments of the university.
Students prepare research papers which they present at the university's annual student research conferences. Students who achieve significant results in their studies, research, and socially beneficial activities are included in the Gifted Youth Database.
Studentship is the most wonderful time. Students can try themselves in sports, amateur performances, and research activities.
The university's student and sports clubs invite all talented students to participate in amateur performances and join the university's basketball, volleyball, football, table tennis, and other sports teams.
Doctor-graduate in the speciality “General Medicine” is prepared to solve the following tasks: work in the structure of therapeutic and preventive institutions, prevention and early detection of various diseases, qualified provision of planned and emergency medical care, master the algorithm of clinical diagnosis and treatment of the patient.
After completing internship, graduates of the Faculty of General Medicine get a qualification certificate, authorizing them to practice medicine. Later on garduates have the opportunity to undergo additional retraining courses and obtain a more specialized qualification, such as ultrasound doctor, gastroenterologist, cardiologist, pulmonologist, oncologist, endocrinologist, etc.
