The first physics lecturers at the preuniversity department of the Comel State Medical Institute, and later the first staff members of the department, were Associate Professor Boris K. Kuznetsov, Valery A. Ignatenko, and Vladimir V. Gavrilov.
In the year of the department's establishment, through the efforts of its staff, all necessary teaching materials were prepared and equipment was acquired to support the educational process for the institute's first-year students. Many instruments were donated to the Gomel State Medical Institute free of charge by enterprises in the city of Gomel. The result of this work was the department's almost complete readiness to begin classes with first-year students of the Gomel State Medical Institute starting September 1, 1991. However, the department actually commenced its teaching activities only on October 1, 1991, in the premises of the former Vocational Training Center of the Central District of Gomel, at 11a Biletskogo Street.
The first head of the department (1991–2003) was Candidate of Biological Sciences, Associate Professor Boris K. Kuznetsov, the first dean of the Faculty of General Medicine.
In January 2004, the department was headed by Candidate of Biological Sciences, Associate Professor Valery A. Ignatenko, head of the preuniversity department, head of the Central Research Laboratory of the Gomel Medical Institute (later - University).
In its first academic year (1991-1992), the department provided training for first-year students of the first official student intake at the Gomel State Medical Institute.
The team enthusiastically engaged in teaching and research work. Staff members received dissertation topics, and a student scientific circle was organized.
Since 2020, the department has been headed by Candidate of Biological Sciences, Associate Professor Boris K. Kuznetsov.
