The Department of General and Bioorganic Chemistry was established on December 1, 1990, and began its work with classes in the preparatory department. Since September 1, 1991, the department has been organizing educational processes for first-year medical students in the courses of general and bioorganic chemistry. The department was headed by Antonina Vladimirovna Lysenkova, a Candidate of Chemical Sciences and Associate Professor.
A.V. Lysenkova graduated from the Chemistry Department of the Belarusian State University and completed postgraduate studies at the All-Union Scientific Research Vitamin Institute in Moscow. She also completed advanced training at medical schools in St. Petersburg, Moscow, Minsk, and Grodno.
She is the author of over 120 publications, including seven inventions.
The department's first full-time faculty members were:

Senior Lecturer Lyudmila Vasilyevna Prishchepova.
She graduated from the Faculty of Chemistry of the Belarusian State University in 1983. At Gomel State Medical University, she worked as a department assistant from 1991 to 2000 and as a senior lecturer from 2000 to 2015.

In 1992, a course in biological chemistry was organized in the Department of General and Bioorganic Chemistry under the direction of Alexander Ivanovich Gritsuk, PhD, Associate Professor. The Department of General and Bioorganic Chemistry with a course in biological chemistry operated with this staff until 1996.
From 1998 to 1999, the department included a course in pharmacology and was renamed the Department of General and Bioorganic Chemistry with a course in pharmacology.
The staff gradually expanded. Over the years, the department has included assistants Lyudmila Grigoryevna Sokolovskaya, Nadezhda Timofeevna Vorobey, Sofia Grigoryevna Kozlova, and Irina Valeryevna Prishchepova (2012-2020); Senior lecturers: Lyudmila Vasilievna Prishchepova (1991-2015), Lyudmila Viktorovna Chernysheva (2001-2021); Associate Professors: Candidate of Chemical Sciences Olga Petrovna Krivelevich (2003-2006), Candidate of Engineering Sciences Andrey Mikhailovich Valenkov (2017-2018).

Since 1997, the department has offered analytical chemistry to second-year students of the Faculty of General Medicine and Diagnostics.
In 2001, the department organized training for students of the Faculty of General Medicine and Prevention.
Since 2002, classes have been offered to students of the preparatory department of the Faculty of Specialist Training for Foreign Countries (currently the Faculty of International Students (FIS)).
Since 2003, the department has offered classes in general and bioorganic chemistry in English for international students. Associate Professor Valentina Anatolyevna Filippova and Senior Lecturer Lyudmila Viktorovna Chernysheva have made significant contributions to the development of the educational and theoretical foundation for training FIS students.

The department's staff has developed teaching aids for first-year students in the General, Bioorganic, and Analytical Chemistry faculties across all disciplines, in both Russian and English, and for second-year students in the Medical and Diagnostics Faculty. These teaching aids are constantly updated, and supporting teaching materials and visual aids are created.
In 2017, after the merger, the department became known as the Department of General, Bioorganic and Biological Chemistry.

The department was headed by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Alexander Ivanovich Gritsuk.

He graduated from the Pediatrics Department of the Sverdlovsk State Medical Institute in 1974. From 1974 to 1992, he worked in the Department of Biological and Bioorganic Chemistry at his alma mater, first as an assistant professor and then as an associate professor. He worked at the Sverdlovsk State Medical University from 1996 to 2019.
He is the author of over 220 scientific papers and two patents. His research interests include radiation and clinical biochemistry, and the biochemistry of extreme conditions.
In 2019, Irina Aleksandrovna Nikitina, PhD in Biology, became the head of the department.

As of March 1, 2021, following a reorganization, the Department of General and Bioorganic Chemistry was established. Elena Grigoryevna Tyulkova, PhD in Biology and Associate Professor, has been appointed Head of the Department.
