Department of Phthisiopulmonology with the course of Advanced Training and Retraining

The Phthisiopulmonology Department dates from the founding of Gomel State Medical Institute in 1990 (up to 1993 it was arranged as a specialised course at The Department of infectious diseases). Since 2017 the Course of Advanced Training and Retraining has been working for medical professionals at the department as well.

The clinical base of the Phthisiopulmonology Department is Gomel regional clinical tuberculosis hospital which is a unique medical centre of the chest and respiratory pathology. The clinic presents a wide spectrum of both tuberculosis and non-specific respiratory diseases including rare and orphan clinical cases with high level of professional medical education.

Today the Phthisiopulmonology Department of Gomel State Medical University is one of the leading scientific and practical centres of The Republic of Belarus to investigate tuberculosis and respiratory pathology.

In 1990-2000 the Phthisiopulmonology Department was headed by PhD E.I.Sokolovsky who was one of the leading co-founders of the Gomel State Medical Institute and its Vice-rector for Clinical Work.

In 2000-2012 the department was headed by PhD D.Yu.Ruzanov (2012-2020 Vice-rector for Clinical Work of  Gomel State Medical University; to the present - the scientific director of The Belorussian State Institution "Republican Scientific and Practical Centre for Pulmonology and Phthisiology").

Since 2012 the Phthisiopulmonology Department of Gomel State Medical University is headed by the highly experienced Belarusian scientist and medical doctor I.V.Buinevich (PhD, 2004) who is one of the leading respiratory medicine specialists in The Republic of Belarus and has high international appreciation in the Eastern European region. 

The department trains hundreds of medical students and post-graduate specialists annually. The special education and basic scientific skills has been provided to hundreds of medical students (since 2008 including to the international ones). Since 2012 the education has been provided for English-speaking medical students from different countries.

The Phthisiopulmonology Department of Gomel State Medical University has more than 700 scientific publications (including international ones) and more than 200 students’ scientific articles and theses published.

The medical specialists of our department actively participate national and international scientific and practical events. The researches are concerning tuberculosis in high-prevalence regions of The Republic of Belarus (the east-southern areas), HIV-associated tuberculosis, mycobacteriosis, mutual influence of tuberculosis and COVID-19, post-COVID lung disorders and respiratory drug-resistant pathogens. 

The medical specialists of the department are providing medical care and observation to thousands of in- and out-patients with tuberculosis and different respiratory diseases. All the professionals have the highest and primary medical categories and practical skills.
