Students are trained at three faculties: medical, medical-diagnostic and the faculty of training specialists for foreign countries in general surgery (2-3 courses), pediatric surgery (5 course), in subordination in surgery (6 course).

The department provides organizational and methodological management of internship, clinical residency, postgraduate and doctoral studies. The faculty of the department uses modern approaches to training in its work. Lectures and classes are held at a high methodological level, maximum attention is paid to practicing practical skills, communicating with patients, analyzing clinical cases, which allows you to apply and well consolidate theoretical knowledge.

The department has developed and constantly updated methodological recommendations for practical classes for students and teachers, auxiliary material, situational tasks, test control. Work is underway to prepare electronic educational and methodological complexes in the disciplines taught. Innovative teaching methods are being introduced, multimedia presentations are used in practical classes and lectures.

In addition, much attention is paid to the scientific training of students and young scientists. The student scientific circle at the Department of Surgery has been organized from the first days of its creation.

Along with the pedagogical load, the staff of the department also carries out medical work. In addition to the supervised patients, the department provides consultative assistance not only in the clinic, but also in the departments of hospitals, emergency surgical assistance is provided to residents of the city of Gomel, Gomel district and region, and assistance is provided through sanitary aviation.

The range of operations performed by the staff of the department includes all emergency and planned surgery on the abdominal organs, emergency surgery on the chest organs, surgery in patients with thermal trauma.

Employees of the department take an active part in the work of scientific and practical conferences and seminars, in plenums, scientific forums, international symposia, congresses.

The faculty participates in consultations, medical advisory commissions, clinical conferences, reviews medical histories, develops and implements new methods of diagnosing and treating diseases. Some employees have moved into practical health care and work as surgeons in various institutions in the city and region.

Research work is carried out in such areas as infection in surgery, surgery of the liver, biliary tract, pancreas, surgical gastroenterology, wounds and wound process, kidney transplantation, endocrine surgery.

The employees of the department published more than 1000 scientific papers, received 21 patents for the invention and utility model, approved more than 10 instructions for the method of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Belarus, 50 rationalization proposals, more than 100 acts on the practical use of research result.
