The Department of Histology, Cytology, and Embryology was established in 1991 in Academic Building No. 3 at 11 K. Marksa Street. Classes for first-year students began in January 1992.

From 1991 to 2011, the department was headed by Tatyana Georgievna Kuznetsova, PhD (Biology), Associate Professor, who made a significant contribution to the department's development and organization.

Her research focused on the study of blood cells using atomic force microscopy.

The department's first faculty consisted of four people: Department Head, Associate Professor, PhD (Biology), T.G. Kuznetsova; Associate Professor, PhD (Veterinary Sciences), N.I. Parfentsov; PhD (Veterinary Sciences), G.M. Kazantseva; and Assistant Professor, G.A. Zelenko.

In the first year of the department's existence, its staff undertook a tremendous amount of work to equip and organize it. G.S. Katinas, Professor of the Department of Histology, Cytology, and Embryology at St. Petersburg Medical University, provided significant assistance in organizing it. Professors A.S. Leontyuk, A.A. Artishevsky, and B.A. Sluka, from the Department of Histology, Cytology, and Embryology at Minsk State Medical Institute (now Bashkir State Medical University), also provided invaluable support.
They provided textbooks and microscope slides, lectured to students and department staff, and participated in the first state examinations. Lecturers T.G. Kuznetsova, N.I. Parfentsev, E.K. Solodova, and G.A. Zelenko completed internships at medical institutes in the Republic of Belarus in Minsk, Grodno, and Vitebsk.
