E-mail: pat_anatomy@gsmu.byThe history of pathological anatomy at Gomel State Medical University dates back to 1990. In that year, Professor Yuri Ivanovich Bandazhevsky, who had obtained the degree of Doctor of Medical Sciences at the age of 31, became the first Rector of the newly established Gomel State Medical Institute. In December 1990, the Department of Pathology was founded, uniting courses in pathological anatomy, pathological physiology, forensic medicine, and the autopsy and biopsy course. Professor Yu.I. Bandazhevsky served as the first Head of the Department.
From the early years of its existence, the Department was distinguished by a strong academic staff. Since 1991, its personnel included A.M. Perepletchikov, T.S. Ugolnik, I.V. Vuyevskaya, A.I. Werner, Yu.N. Dedik, A.V. Mishin, L.A. Martemyanova, A.N. Shkandratova, Zh.E. Romanishko, O.G. Ruban, N.G. Maltseva, A.S. Lavrenova, L.F. Levchuk, and L.A. Ryabikova. During this period, the main focus of scientific research was the study of the effects of low-dose radiation on human health, a topic of high relevance for the region.
In 2001, as a result of structural reorganization, the Department of Pathological Anatomy with a course in Forensic Medicine was established by order of the Rector of Gomel State Medical Institute. The Department was headed by Oleg Anatolyevich Golubev, Candidate of Medical Sciences. In 2002, O.A. Golubev defended his doctoral dissertation entitled “Relationships between the Vascular Component of Communication Systems and Intratissue Regulators in Breast Cancer.” He authored more than 100 scientific publications in the fields of oncomorphology, pathological anatomy of infectious and internal diseases, healthcare organization, as well as educational manuals, patents for inventions, and rationalization proposals.

Under Professor Golubev’s leadership, the Department became an active center for scientific training. Four Candidate of Medical Sciences dissertations were defended, and one doctoral and nine candidate dissertations were completed under his supervision. Twenty-two pathologists and three clinical residents specializing in pathological anatomy were trained. The preparation of scientific and pedagogical personnel was carried out through postgraduate studies and doctoral candidature programs, involving both full-time and part-time trainees, including international postgraduate students.

Since 2007, the Department has been headed by Lyudmila Aleksandrovna Martemyanova, Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor. Under her leadership, the Department continues to actively develop scientific research, educational, and methodological activities, engaging both academic staff and students in research work.

At present, the Department provides teaching in pathological anatomy, forensic medicine, and clinical cytology, and carries out the training of medical interns. The main scientific areas of research include oncomorphology, clinical cytology, infectious pathology, congenital malformations, morphology of non-developing pregnancy, pediatric pathological anatomy, and contemporary issues of forensic medical examination.
The Department plays an important role in the scientific life of the University and the Republic of Belarus. Its staff organized and conducted the II Congress of Pathologists of the Republic of Belarus in May 2011, dedicated to the problems of pathomorphological diagnosis of modern infections and other diseases, as well as international scientific and practical conferences, including a memorial conference honoring Professor O.A. Golubev.
In addition to educational and research activities, the Department conducts continuing professional development courses for pathologists, physicians of other specialties, and university lecturers. A student scientific society operates at the Department, providing motivated students with opportunities to participate in national and international scientific and practical conferences and competitions of student research works.
Over the years, the Department of Pathological Anatomy has established itself as a leading academic, scientific, and diagnostic center, making a significant contribution to medical education, research, and healthcare practice.
