The Department of Oncology was established at the Gomel State Medical Institute by order of the rector in 1996. Vasily Nikolaevich Belyakovsky, PhD (Med.), Associate Professor, was appointed the first head of the department. Since its inception, the Gomel Regional Clinical Oncology Dispensary has served as the department's clinical base.
In 1997, the Department of Oncology was merged with the Department of Radiation Diagnostics and Radiation Therapy, which was established in February 1993 and headed by Leonid Porfiryevich Galkin, PhD, Associate Professor (from 1997 to 2008, Head of the Radiation Diagnostics and Radiation Therapy Course).
Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor Vasily Nikolaevich Belyakovsky was elected Head of the Department of Oncology, Radiation Diagnostics and Radiation Therapy.

From 1996 to 2000, Sergei Arkadyevich Polikarpov, a medical oncologist and surgeon and a candidate of medical sciences, served as the department's assistant. From 1996 to 2007, Tatyana Vladimirovna Davidovich, a radiologist, served as the department's assistant. From 2000 to 2016, Nina Pavlovna Dumova, a laboratory assistant, worked in the department.
From September 2001 to May 2002, the head of the department was Doctor of Medical Sciences Alexander Sergeevich Zuev.
In 2002, Vasily Nikolaevich Belyakovsky, PhD (Med.), Associate Professor (2001-2002 – Vice-Rector for Clinical Affairs at Gomel State Medical University), was re-elected Head of the Department.
In 2007, V.N. Belyakovsky defended his doctoral dissertation on "Cervical Dysplasia and Stage I-II Cancer in Young and Middle-Aged Women," and in 2012 he was promoted to Professor. He is a gynecological oncologist of the highest qualification category.

Since 2006, an assistant (from 2008 to 2016 – candidate of medical sciences, associate professor, head of the course of radiation diagnostics) Aleksey Mikhailovich Yurkovsky worked at the department.

In 2016, the Radiation Diagnostics and Radiation Therapy program was separated from the Department of Oncology. Igor Viktorovich Mikhailov, MD, PhD, and Associate Professor, was elected Head of the Department of Oncology. In 2005, he defended his PhD dissertation, "Combined Surgeries with Pancreatic Resection for Gastric Cancer," and in 2008, he received the academic title of Associate Professor.


The department's staff is actively engaged in consultative and therapeutic work at the clinical site and in the professorial and consultative center. The main areas of clinical work are abdominal oncopathology, gynecological oncology, head and neck tumors, and thoracic oncopathology. The department's staff are active members of the Belarusian Society of Oncologists.
