In November 1995, the Department of Surgical Diseases № 3 was established. Its clinical bases were the Divisional Hospital at Gomel Station and the inpatient department of the chemical plant’s medical unit. The department was headed by Associate Professor Nikolai Grigorievich Shebushev, PhD (Medical Sciences).
It should be noted that on December 25, 1993, with the participation of Nikolai Grigorievich Shebushev, the first laparoscopic cholecystectomy in the Gomel region was performed. This procedure later became widely used in surgical practice. Nikolai Grigorievich is considered an innovator and a pioneer of laparoscopic and minimally invasive surgery in the Gomel region.
The department had clinical bases in six hospitals and offered numerous training cycles. Fourth‑ to sixth‑year students studied surgical diseases, ophthalmology, urology, and cardiovascular surgery.

At various times, the following specialists worked at the department: Lyzikov A.A., Bontsevich D.N., Kaplan M.L., Getmanchuk S.M., Rouba F.S., Sharikova A.V., Chepuro I.V., Prezov A.I., Radkov I.V., Kovalevskaya V.I., Kovalevskaya P.I., Karpovich E.V., Knyazyuk A.S., Lemtyugov M.B., Puzan A.E., Simchenko N.I., Dravitsa L.V., Biryukov F.I., Samokhvalova N.M., Pechenkin A.A., Matusov P.G., Kabeshev B.O., Martynyuk V.V., and Krupeichenko A.N.
In 2004, a course in cardiovascular surgery was introduced, and the department was renamed the Department of Surgical Diseases No. 3 with courses in ophthalmology, urology, and cardiovascular surgery.
In 2008, the ophthalmology cycle was separated from the department due to the creation of the Department of Otolaryngology with an ophthalmology course.

In 2018, the department was renamed again and is now called the Department of Surgical Diseases № 3.
In November 2019, Associate Professor Valentin Vladimirovich Bereschenko, PhD, was appointed head of the department.
Currently, the department has the following clinical bases:
Students are trained in three faculties: General Medicine, Medical Diagnostics, and the Faculty of International Students.
The department has an active student research club. Students present the results of their research at international and national student conferences.
In accordance with the university’s plan, the department conducts ideological and educational work with students. Postgraduate training is provided through clinical residency and postgraduate programs in surgery.
