The infectious disease courses have been taught at the Department of the Internal Diseases since 1991. The first teacher of the infectious diseases course was Candidate of Medical Sciences A.A. Tarannikov, and since April 1992, Candidate of Medical Sciences E. L. Krasavtsev. Since 1993, the infectious diseases course had been attached to the Department of Phthisiopulmonology.

The Department of the Infectious Diseases was established independently in 1995. E.L. Krasavtsev, Сandidate of medical sciences, was appointed as the head of the department and held the position until December 2022.

Since 2000, under the leadership of Professor S. V. Zhavoronok, Doctor of Medical Sciences, the department's organizational, methodological, and scientific work has intensified. Since his arrival, the Department of the Infectious Diseases has mastered new techniques based on enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and polymerase chain reaction, and international students have begun studying Tropical Diseases.

Since February 2023, Elena I. Kozorez, Candidate of Medical Sciences and Associate Professor, has headed the department.

The department's staff actively participates in national and international conferences. A number of educational and methodological manuals for students of higher education institutions were published. The staff's main research areas include hepatology, HIV-infection, COVID-19, the microbiome, and vaccinology. Particular attention is paid to the students research work. Members of the department's student research club regularly publish their research results and submit their work to the National Scientific Paper Competition, where they win prizes. Every year, the department organizes the student conference "December Readings. Infection in Medicine", an infectious disease olympiad, and an "Infectious Disease Brain Ring".
The department's staff, continuing its established traditions, is dynamically developing professionally and strives to pass on its wealth of experience and knowledge to future generations of Belarusian doctors.
