The history of the Gomel State Medical University dates back to 1990, when by the Resolution of the Council of Ministers of the BSSR dated 11/14/1990 No. 284 and the order of the Minister of Health of the BSSR dated 11/20/1990 No. 188, with the aim of ensuring the training of highly qualified doctors and specialists for those most affected by the Chernobyl disaster in the Gomel and Mogilev regions, the Gomel State Medical Institute was opened in November 1990.
Many people took part in the opening of the institute, including the city and regional administration: A.A.Grakhovsky, N.G.Voitenkov, V.S.Vorobey, L.A.Shemetkov, A.S.Shaginyan, V.V Lazarevich and others whose assistance was invaluable.
The institute was headed by Doctor of Medical Sciences Professor Yuri Ivanovich Bandazhevsky.
The establishment of the university was driven by the urgent need for medical personnel in the Gomel and Mogilev regions affected by the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident, as well as the need to conduct scientific research to study the medical consequences of the Chernobyl disaster and find ways to overcome them.
In December 1990, by Order No. 557r of the Council of Ministers of the BSSR, a preparatory department for 120 students was opened, with funding allocated from the reserve fund of the Council of Ministers of the BSSR.
In 1992 54 doctors graduated and in 1997 the first graduating class of the Gomel State Medical Institute (GSMI) took place.
For the first time in the USSR and the CIS, a pathology department was established, along with a maternal and child health department and a valeology course.
A crucial role in the development of clinical departments belongs to the chief physicians of the clinical sites: A.A. Averchenko, L.I. Druyan, V.I. Rozansky, E.I. Rusakov, and others, who created all the conditions for organizing the educational process, providing lecture halls, classrooms, and information stands.
At various times, significant contributions to the development and improvement of the educational, methodological, and research work of the Gomel State Medical Institute were made by: E.K.Kapitonova, N.N.Ostreiko, B.K.Kuznetsov, V.A.Ignatenko, T.G.Glyakova, L.A.Bondarenko, V.F. Aleinikov, S.I.Yupatov, V.N.Bortnovsky, N.P.Guden, L.K.Stasenko, T.P.Barinova, V.P.Soya, N.V.Timoshenko. T.G.Khavlina, D.V.Vvedensky, S.N.Bordak, M.E.Abramenko, L.V.Romankov, L.N.Zhurova, A.A.Shevyako, N.F.Yakusheva, A.V.Lysenkova, I.I.Mistyukevich, E.I.Sokolovsky, E.A.Boyarinova, N.G.Shebushev, Z.A.Dundarov, V.M.Lobankov, V.Ya.Latysheva, E.N.Toporkova, F.I.Kaipov and many others.
From 1991 to 1999 the Gomel State Medical Institute graduated 1037 physicians, defended three doctoral dissertations, and trained over 20 candidates of science, contributing to the expansion of the Gomel region's scientific and medical community.
In 1999 Doctor of Medical Sciences Professor Sergei Vladimirovich Zhavoronok was appointed rector of the university.
Based on Order No. 133 of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Belarus dated June 5, 2001 and Decision No. 606 of the Gomel Regional Executive Committee dated July 24, 2001 the institute was renamed the State Higher Educational Institution "Gomel State Medical Institute."
Modern educational technologies and a Telemedicine Center were introduced, the range of scientific research was expanded and a Central Research Laboratory was opened.
In 2000 by decision of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Belarus, a faculty for training specialists for foreign countries was established. Training of specialists for foreign countries began in English. The first foreign citizens graduated from Gomel State Medical Institute in 2001.
In 2001 the republic's only Faculty of Medical Diagnostics was opened, followed by the Faculty of Preventive Medicine in 2011.
Based on the 2002 entrance examination rankings, Gomel State Medical Institute ranked fifth among all state universities in the republic and first among medical universities.
In accordance with Order No. 242 of the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Belarus dated June 13, 2003 Gomel State Medical Institute was accredited in the Republic of Belarus as a university-type institution and was renamed the Gomel State Medical University.
Stable relationships were established with many foreign universities in Japan, Great Britain, Italy, the USA, Russia, and elsewhere, enabling the university to integrate into the global educational community.
Between 2000 and 2006 1578 physicians graduated, including 119 specialists for foreign countries. 55 candidates and doctors of sciences were prepared and defended, including 8 foreign citizens.
In April 2010 Gomel State Medical University was awarded an international certificate of compliance of its quality management system with the requirements of the ISO 9001:2008 standard.
From 2007 to November 2019 6355 physicians graduated, including 597 specialists for foreign countries; 86 candidates of science and two doctors of science were trained and defended, including four foreign citizens. In 2019, five candidate dissertations and one doctoral dissertation were prepared and defended.
In September 2020 Doctor of Medical Sciences Professor Igor Olegovich Stoma was appointed Rector of Gomel State Medical University.
In December 2021 Gomel State Medical University received international institutional accreditation according to the standards of the World Federation for Medical Education.
Between 2020 and April 2024 23 candidate and three doctoral dissertations were prepared and defended.

The Scientific Medical Library is the center of information and educational space for students, faculty and scientists of the university, and practical healthcare doctors of Gomel and the Gomel region.
The library provides its users with a rich collection of educational and scientific literature, a collection of Electronic Library documents, Internet access to global medical resources and electronic catalogs of other libraries, which facilitates the training of highly professional medical personnel.
Over the course of its existence, the university has built a highly professional team capable of training medical personnel at the required level, conducting scientific research and providing medical and advisory assistance to the population.
88 monographs, 1343 textbooks and teaching aids have been published, 115 of which have the stamp of the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Belarus.
In accordance with the national classifier of the Republic of Belarus, the university implements:
A first-level higher education program that provides qualifications for specialists with higher education. The first-level program offers training in three specialties: 1–79 01 01 "General Medicine" 1–79 01 04 "Medical Diagnostics" and 1–79 01 03 "Medical Preventive Care";
A second-level higher education program and a postgraduate program that develop knowledge, skills and abilities in scientific, pedagogical, and research work, leading to a master's degree. Training of highly qualified scientific personnel is organized both full-time and on-the-job through graduate, doctoral, and candidate programs. Candidates of science are trained through full-time, part-time, and candidate programs in 31 specialties. Currently 62 people are enrolled in the graduate program.
There are currently 108 people studying in clinical residency, 710 of whom are foreign citizens;

Gomel State Medical University is one of the most important centers of medical science in the Republic of Belarus. The main forms of research activity at Gomel State Medical University are: fundamental, applied and contractual research, as well as the organization and holding of scientific conferences and seminars; training of highly qualified scientific personnel; organization of a student scientific society and a Council of Young Scientists; invention and innovation; and publication of scientific literature (monographs, journals, collections of articles, and theses).
University scientists participate in research carried out under government programs and social orders in the field of fundamental research.
In 2023 four monographs 27 educational and teaching aids with the stamp of the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Belarus and the Educational and Methodological Association for Higher Medical and Pharmaceutical Education, 14 teaching aids were published, 1755 articles were published in journals and collections of scientific papers, including 425 in foreign publications.
During the period from 1996 to April 2024 184 patents were received, 1430 rationalization proposals were submitted and accepted for use and 163 instructions for use on methods of prevention, diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and organizational forms of work were approved.
The advances of 21st-century medicine are driven not only by advances in fundamental and applied sciences, biology and cutting-edge technical projects, but also to a significant extent, by the people who implement the results of theoretical medical research into practical medicine.
As part of its international cooperation Gomel State Medical University has concluded and is currently implementing cooperation agreements (contracts) with foreign educational institutions, research centers, and other organizations.
Through international projects and programs, the university's material, technical and educational-methodological resources are being strengthened, curricula are being developed, new programs are being introduced, and the training and professional development of research and teaching staff is being conducted.
In the personnel training system, educational and ideological work plays a special role. The goal of this work is to create the conditions for the development of individuals possessing patriotic civic qualities, spiritual, moral and cultural-ethical values, mastering generally accepted rules of social conduct, meeting the characteristics of a competent specialist, and capable of self-realization and achieving success.
In accordance with these guidelines, significant attention is paid to project-based activities which are implemented across a wide range of areas and allow each student to realize their creative ideas and develop their leadership potential in various areas of the socio-political, economic and cultural life of the city, region and country.
